NMAAM is the only museum dedicated to preserving and celebrating the many music genres created, influenced, and inspired by African Americans. The museum’s expertly-curated collections share the story of the American soundtrack by integrating history and interactive technology to bring the musical heroes of the past into the present. Discover the importance of African American music in shaping the American soundscape.
Your experience begins in the Roots Theater with an introductory film that gives an overview of west and central African cultures and the institution of slavery. The presentation focuses on the evolution of African American culture, with specific emphasis on the creation of new music traditions – spirituals, blues, jazz, gospel, R&B, and hip hop – that are distinctly African American in nature.
From there, enter the Rivers of Rhythm corridor and dive into music genres on our large touch screens. Keep an eye out for one of the Take Over Moments! Move into the galleries: Rivers of Rhythm Pathways, Wade in the Water, Crossroads, A Love Supreme, One Nation Under a Groove, and The Message. Explore at your own pace and let the music guide you!
